Many split ring pliers are toys. You get what you pay for. This pair is professional grade. I fish many days a year and have had many pairs of cheap slit ring pliers. I finally bit the bullet and paid for a good set. So glad I did. The Xuron 496 pliers can open even the smallest rings without damage. The sharp nose fits easily in any size split ring and the extended lower jaw holds the ring nicely while you roll it on or off the lure. I'm buying more to use as Christmas gifts for my sons and fishing buddies.

This tool was recommended by "Good Old Boat" as a tool to help with fastening split rings into clevis pins as well as for removing cotter pins out of standing rigging. I can speak from experience that this tool will certainly eliminate broken fingernails and dropped split rings into the drink. Highly recommended.

I make and modify lures for everything from trout to tarpon,recently in-line spinners. Hobby grade tools were undependable and uncomfortable for hard and continued use. These pliers are industrial grade, US made and actually only a couple of dollars more than junk.They have worked with every size of wire and split ring. These and a pair of round nose pliers for working with wire are the most useful additions to any fisherman's kit.

this item is a prefect replacement for TRL's split ring pliers if not the exact same thing.
i am always loosing my split ring pliers so this is much better than waiting for new ones to come from TRL
