1Unsafe!Feb 07, 2011
By Zach's Mom
I received this thermometer as a shower gift over a year ago and I should have returned it the first time I noticed that it wasn't accurate at all. You can never get the same reading in a row and it's never accurate. Last night was the first night that I could tell that my son had a fever, he was burning up. I took his temp 4 times with the underarm tip and each time received a different temp, none which were a fever. I finally took his temp with a cheap thermometer that I keep in my diaper bag and it came back with 101.4 three times in a row! It was at least a 3-4 degree difference from the Safety 1st thermometer.
This thermometer is totally unreliable and not safe since it does not give accurate readings. I could only imagine what would happen if I child had a temp over 103 but the thermometer didn't read it correctly. The parent wouldn't know to seek medical attention!

5I LOVE this thermometer!Nov 18, 2011
By K. Hubmer
I am an ER nurse, so I wanted a thermometer that was similar to the ones I'm used to using at work. So far, I've only used the rectal probe (the ONLY reliable way to check a temp on an infant), and I love that it is fast and accurate. A tip for those encountering error messages: don't connect the probe until after the thermometer finishes starting up. Wait until all the start-up numbers go away and you only see dash marks.

1What a disappointment!Mar 30, 2011
By Pacific Dreamer
We purchased this thermometer out of desperation when both our boys (ages 3.5 years and 1 month) were sick and we needed to take their temperatures. We thought this would be great because it got such good reviews (on another website) from everyone else, liked that it is similar to those used in the hospital and were impressed by the 3 different probe tips for taking temperatures using different methods.

We found ourselves disappointed when we went to take our 3.5 year old son's temperature with the armpit attachment and it indicated that he did not have a temperature, when he actually had a temperature of 102. We repeatedly tried the armpit probe attachment and found it always read considerably lower than it should have. We ended up using the oral probe attachment to take his temperature under the arm which seemed to have a more accurate reading. However, we found that often this thermometer indicated that he did NOT have a temperature when in fact he did. We found a cheap digital oral thermometer did much better at assessing his temperature.

We tried the various probes with our 1 month old son and found similar results. The biggest problem we found was that the thermometer finished taking his temperature so quickly that it was inaccurate by 1-2 degrees!!! We would immediately take his temperature again and get a new higher reading. We found we had to complete this cycle 5-7 times before receiving the highest most accurate reading (as indicated by testing with the cheap digital oral thermometer). It seems as if you never get the same temperature reading twice, even if you don't remove the thermometer and retake the temperature immediately. How confusing.

All-in-all, we were extremely disappointed by the performance of this thermometer and ended up returning it to the store! We remain confused as to why other reviewers gave this thermometer such favorable reviews. Perhaps we ended up with a defective one? I'm not sure, it will be interesting to see if other consumers experience the same problems we did when using this product.

1UnreliableApr 17, 2012

We've only used the rectal attachment for our baby (now 10 months). It is very unreliable. Frequently, we will take his temperature and then take it again 30 seconds later & the readings are sometimes vastly different. When your baby is sick, you don't want the uncertainty of not knowing if there's fever or how high the fever is. I am now looking for something more reliable.

1Doesn't work and leads to tantrumsApr 13, 2012

We used this with our son until he was 14 months old and wouldn't stop crying. The doctor told us to look for a certain temp, and although he felt warm, the thermometer never said he had a temperature. We took him in anyway and it was 102! After about 4 months old, the rectal was out and it was a complete battle to get him to sit still enough to keep the under arm one in place. Then, we had to do it 3 or 4 times to get a temp even close to normal, let alone find a fever. We finally bought a new thermometer like the one at the doctor's office, which has worked wonderfully. We stuck the old thermometer in a bathroom drawer.

Well, we should have thrown it away. Today, I thought I was going nutts because of a really high peircing sound... I finally tracked the noise to this thermometer! After not being used for months, it decided to let out an obnoxious shrill that can be heard all over the house. The screw that keeps the battery in is so tiny that I had to find a special screwdriver- and then the screw was so cheap that it stripped out! So, I can't even open it! I finally resorted to putting it in the far corner of the garage, but you can still hear it in the kitchen. I don't know how I'm going to get rid of this thing now! Buyer beware!
