4Celestron 100 prepared slide item 44412 listingJul 19, 2008
By Jesse A. Ritz
Celestron has taken the typical Chinese laboratory prepared slides, corrected many of the spelling errors in the listing that comes with the box and packed the wooden box in a nice printed cardboard box. The selection is more interesting than the three other '100 slide' collections that we have, but the quality of the slides is the same. Only about forty of the slides are duplicates of our other sets, and ten of those are different enough to merit keeping both prepared specimens. I like the wooden box, and Celestron's slide labels are better than the other three sets because they have the slide numbers located at the very top of the label (some sets do not number the slides themselves).

Six of the slides are not what is listed in the printed list of contents; not a cause for complaint since no seller had a listing of the slides when we ordered them. Your purchase may have different substitutions. Many of the slides have spelling errors typical of a non-English speaking, non scientific person typing the labels for the slides from a handwritten or dictated list. Most of those errors are corrected in the list enclosed in the box but there are still several mistakes; for example the slide labeled "Eloden Stem" is corrected to read "Leiden Stem" in the listing, but appears to be an Elodea (waterweed) stem. One of our slides has a large piece of the corner broken off; it was not in the box. I haven't viewed all the slides, only the duplicates.

The following list has been corrected to the best of my ability, standardized according to our own method, and cross referenced to make it easier to find a particular slide. I am a novice so I may have introduced new mistakes. We have 450 slides combined and sorted alphabetically, with duplicates included when they show different features, so with one list we can find any slide we have.

4Good starter kitMar 27, 2009

Great for showing the microscopic world to a beginner. Enough variety to keep them interested for awhile. Good companion to go along with a decent scope.

5Fast shipping, good condition...Apr 10, 2009
By Mekaloc
The slides are of excellent quality and as described. You may not can tell by the picture, but the box that the slides are in is made of wood. I bought this set along with a microscope and a book entitled 'A Guide to Microlife' for my 14 and 16 year old. They really enjoy it and we are making our own slides to add to the collection. If properly handled and stored, this is a gift that can be passed along for years to come.

3A decent set but Amazon packaging substandard.Sep 13, 2011
By Bill King
At 70 cents a slide the quality cannot be expected to be very high. After all mounting very specific parts from tiny bio material onto thin fragile pieces of glass is difficult enough.

Most slides were of good quality. In abut a half dozen others the specimen was squashed beyond recognition and on a few slides the adhesive was smeared badly so as to seep outside the top glass. On a couple, nothing was present between the glass parts, the slides were blank.

Amazon used the normal shipping method of a few air sacks to partially protect. About 50 of the slides fell out of the slots, 2 or 3 even completely from the inner Cellestron box, many were scratched, five were broken in two or more pieces.

The 3 star rating is for the quality of the slide set as new before the shipping. Shipping by Amazon: one star.

I would suggest buying this elsewhere from a company used to shipping very fragile items, they should know how to pack it well. Amazon did not even try to exceed packaging that while OK for books, is not sufficient for optical glass. This set is recommended provided that is done.

5Celestron 44412, 100 prepared microscope slide setNov 11, 2011
By WA M
For use in home schooling a 16 year old granddaughter I could not have found a better selection of general biology slides for the price. Almost without exception, the prepared slides were equal to the quality I used in the classroom as a forty one year public high school science educator and coordinator. We use them with a Celestron LCD microscope also purchased through Amazon with excellent results. The slides are thinner than I used professionally years ago but of excellent quality. Thus, I cautioned my granddaughter to start viewing under the lowest power objective first before switching to higher power. The slides are are accurately labeled in general names and come in a well made slide box with a numbered list of the organisms. I scanned other science specimen sources also and did not find such a comprehensive set near the economical Celestron-Amazon price.
