Sorry, Billy Mays - THIS is the original "Mighty Putty"Jan 10, 2008
By Katy Lake Like 45 billion other people, I saw the Mighty Putty commercial on TV and thought it sounded great. My husband sighed and said, that's been around forever, and a lot cheaper, too.
So I looked around and lo and behold, J-B Weld IS "Mighty Putty," minus the horrific shipping and 'processing' fee.
I bought this at a local hardware store to test it out (around $3 if you can get find it; my husband suggest an auto parts store.) It does work like the commercial says. I wanted to put up a towel rack in a guest bathroom without drilling through the tile.
Well, it worked. Set up in a few minutes. Next day you could hang Billy Mays from it, and I don't think it'd break.
I'd highly recommend the J-B brand, unless you've got a lotta spare cash and you want to make sure Billy Mays retires in style!

JB Stix Weld puttyJan 12, 2008
By Zach Hofmanner Great product, so simple to use. Harder than bondo and wont crack. So much easier than waiting forever for things to cure. This cures quick, with still plenty of time to work with.

Where has this stuff been my whole life!???!!!!!!!!!!!Dec 13, 2009

Let me start by saying...I LOVE THIS STUFF!! I mean it! It is my favorite purchase in a long, long, long time!
What it is: it is putty stuff shaped like a tootsie roll...or a cow tale (if you are familar with that candy!) In the center of the cylindrical putty, is another darker colored compound. You cut off a slice the size you want and knead it in your fingers until it is all the same color. Then you use it to fill holes, fix cracks, stick stuff together (yes it is adhesive, too) etc.
I had it one day and I fixed an old drilled hole in ceramic tile, a hole in a concrete wall, a piece of molding on my garage door, a wheel on a footstool, and a chip on a lamp. I am glad I bought 3 tubes! It is like sticky poster putty, but it dries hard (doesn't shrink) and permanently. Ready for sanding or painting. I admit I have even used White Out and nail polish (on the red lamp) to paint over it! Those little bottles of appliance paint are nice for tiles, too because they are shiny.
It really sticks to every surface I have tried. And you can shape it, not like drippy glue. I like that it not only sticks stuff together, but fills too, so if you are missing a little piece of something broken, you can form another one or fill in the space! I am even contemplating using it to make a little missing finial on an antique clock.
It does dry dark dark gray (almost black), so you have to paint it to match. I wish it came in a white color. But it dries HARD...like cement....not crumbly like joint compound, though. You have to work somewhat quickly, so if you mixed too much and look around for other projects while it is in your hand, it starts to get hard in about 10 minutes.
I just love this stuff and find myself looking for it often. Really does work like it says! You will find many uses for it!

Awesome product!Nov 26, 2008
By S. Nichols The screw piece that was on the top of the harp that holds a heavy stained glass lampshade broke off the day before yesterday. I looked locally for a replacement but could not find one (New Hampshire and not where there are lots of stores). I went to the local hardware store today and they did not have one to fit either. I told the man what it was for and that I would have to find someone to solder it or buy a tool to do it myself. He looked at the two pieces and sold me the last tube of this stuff in the store. Two hours later it was together and an hour and a half later was rock hard. The lamp is back together and there is no sign of weakness to it. This stuff is great!
